The Importance of Choosing the Right Font for Your Website

Updated: Oct 21, 2020

When it comes to choosing the right font for your website don't gloss over it and simply pick the one you like the most. There's a lot more to it than that. Fonts play an important role in how professional your website looks.

Choose the perfect font for your website.

Pick a readable font

Many sites use a sans-serif font for the body copy (such as the one you are reading now) because they are easy on the eye. Sans-serif fonts like Ariel, Avenir, Helvetica, and Poppins are standards that come with your Wix site. Using any of these elevates your site and keeps you from making a rookie mistake by using a font that looks fancy but is hard to read.

Serif fonts, such as Playfair Display and Libre Baskerville (also available in Wix) make for good heading fonts. Serif fonts have "feet" or "points" on the letters (as in the heading above). They aren't as smooth or rounded as the sans serif fonts and tend to be more serious and traditional looking.

PRO TIP: Stick to using only 2-3 different fonts on your site. More than that causes chaos and confusion...a surefire way to make people bounce off your site.

Not all text on your site is equal. Some text, such as headings, are more important. Using a serif font and making it a bit bolder or larger, helps guide the eye to what's important on your site. Most people aren't reading every word. They are scanning. So be sure your most important information is easy to find by separating it with a bolder, larger, different font than the rest of your site.

PRO TIP: Use the hierarchy philosophy by using headings and sub-headings to break up the body of your text.

Font Pairing

Choosing which fonts to use on your site can get a little tricky. They should complement each other but not be too similar. Sometimes using the same font but a different weight or size is enough to keep your site visually interesting.

Some great font pairings to use on your Wix website include:

  • Playfair Display and Avenir

  • Droid Serif and Lato

  • Garamond and Proxima Nova

  • Times New Roman and Helvetica Neue

  • Montserrat and Open Sans

  • Georgia and Brandon Grotesque

PRO TIP: If you want to use a font that isn't available in Wix, simply upload your own font. To upload simply click on any text and click 'edit text'. Go to 'fonts' and click the down arrow to the right of the font name. Click 'upload fonts' in the bottom right and follow the prompts.
