Mobile-First Indexing by Google Begins July 1, 2019 For All New Websites

Google announced that mobile-first indexing--using a website’s mobile version to index its pages--will be the default for all new web domains as of July 1, 2019.

Google Announces Mobile-First Indexing For All New Websites Starting July 1, 2019

What does this mean? When a new website is registered it will be crawled by Google’s smartphone Googlebot, and its mobile-friendly content will be used to index its pages.

Why is Google doing this? This change is aimed at helping Google's “primarily mobile” users to better search the web. Since 2015, Google consumers have been increasingly picking up their smartphones for answers. It only makes sense that the mobile versions of a website — and not the desktop pages — would now be used to deliver search results.

How does this affect you? Now, more than ever, the mobile version of your website needs to be carefully crafted for the end-user--and Google--in mind. Instead of being something that's done as an afterthought, attention to mobile details should be top of mind.
